It features a conventional quay for the efficient loading and unloading of cargo, accommodating container ships with a maximum length of 172 m (564 ft) and a draft of 8.2 m (27 ft).\r\n\r\nThe port\u2019s rich history traces back to 1935 when a royal decree led to the expropriation of land for the construction of a port in Bangkok. The construction and dredging of the Chao Phraya River commenced in 1938, and the first phase of the port was completed in 1947.\r\n\r\nIn the first eight months of the 2010 fiscal year, the port handled 11,936,855 tonnes (13,158,130 tons) of cargo, accounting for about 22 percent of the total cargo handled by the country\u2019s international ports.
