Bangkok Port, fondly known as Khlong Toei Port, is an international port nestled on the Chao Phraya River in the Khlong Toei District of Bangkok, the vibrant capital city of Thailand. The port is under the operation of the Port Authority of Thailand.
Once listed among the world’s 100 busiest container ports, Bangkok Port is a bustling hub of maritime activity. It features a conventional quay for the efficient loading and unloading of cargo, accommodating container ships with a maximum length of 172 m (564 ft) and a draft of 8.2 m (27 ft).
The port’s rich history traces back to 1935 when a royal decree led to the expropriation of land for the construction of a port in Bangkok. The construction and dredging of the Chao Phraya River commenced in 1938, and the first phase of the port was completed in 1947.
In the first eight months of the 2010 fiscal year, the port handled 11,936,855 tonnes (13,158,130 tons) of cargo, accounting for about 22 percent of the total cargo handled by the country’s international ports. The port recorded 3,067 vessel calls in FY2016.
Despite its location about 40 kilometers from the Gulf of Thailand on the Chao Phraya River, which limits access to ships of 12,000 deadweight tonnes or less and not longer than 172 m (564 ft), the port has witnessed significant growth and development over the years, standing as a testament to Thailand’s thriving maritime industry.
